Scismic is supporting the growth of a Tech-Bioproducts company in Virginia.

Job Overview: The Fermentation Scientist reports directly to the Senior Director of Operations and will be responsible for designing, optimizing and executing microbial fermentation processes from bench, pilot to commercial scale.
 

Key Responsibilities:

Fermentation:
  • Lead fermentation process of new biomaterials as the material portfolio of the company grows
  • Design, execute and optimize microbial fermentation processes for yeast-, fungi-, microalgae-, and bacterial-bioproduction
  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies to improve fermentation efficiency and sustainability
  • Proficient  in microbial metabolism, fermentation kinetics, and bioreactor operations from bench through pilot to commercial scales
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proficiency in data analysis software (e.g. JMP, Python, MATLAB)
  • Interpret fermentation data to troubleshoot process challenges and implement solutions
  • Develop SOPs, batch records and process documentation for scale-up and tech transfer
     
Teamwork within Biomanufacturing Operations:
  • Collaborate with strain engineering, downstream processing and analytical teams to enhance product yield and quality
  • Work with project management partners to manage functionally integrated project timelines, work plans, interdependencies and budgets
  • Work closely with manufacturing team to facilitate process scale-up and commercial production
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, biosafety standards, and FDA/GMP/GLP guidelines
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced environment
     
Key Profile Attributes:
  • Proven experience in running microbial bioreactors from Pilot to 20K L scales. Microbes can be any of microalgae, fungi, yeast, bacterial
  • Proficient in Statistical Analysis
  • Ideally, experience in early-stage companies, demonstrating flexibility innovation and a hands-on approach
 

Qualifications:
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related field
  • 3-5+ years of experience post-graduation including at least 3 years in a fermentation team in Industry
  • Proven track record of running bioreactors, process optimization, and troubleshooting/problem solving for pilot to large-scale projects
  • In-depth knowledge of microbial metabolism and upstream processing
