Job description
We’re looking for a Senior Scientist, Fermentation to join our founding scientific team of biochemists, bioengineers, biologists, and computational scientists. This individual will build the company's capacity to perform scale-up fermentation and manufacturing of our solutions.
- Lead fermentation efforts to optimize growth of diverse natural microbial strains. This company works on a large biobank of natural culture isolates and we do not utilize genetic modification/engineering.
- Optimize fermentation conditions (benchtop 2-10L) for a wide range of food-grade microbes, achieving and exceeding desired biomass titers (10^9-10^11 CFU/mL) or other molecular targets
- Optimize simple downstream processing steps (lyophilization, spray drying) to produce high quality end product material
- Generate internal catalog of material for internal and external validation purposes
- Own technology transfer of pilot processes to external manufacturing partners to deliver on commercial targets
- Demonstrated ability to scale fermentations from <1L to ≥10L
- Ability to operate pilot bioreactors (2-10L, 2+ years of experience in working at this scale) and improve fermentation titers using process optimization and design of experiments methodology
- Ability to operate downstream processing equipment (lyophilizer and spray dryer) and improve product yields through process optimization and design of experiments methodology
- Ph.D. in fermentation or a related field; deep domain knowledge of fermentation and metabolism OR
- BS/MS Ph.D and 5+ years of industry experience
- Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor junior scientists; 2+ years preferred
- Excellent communication skills; ability to define needs and communicate results with multiple internal stakeholders
